Something highly unusual and fascinating for the scientifically inclined. A beautiful display or unique gift for the marine biologist or budding paleontologist. This massive tooth once belonged to a now-extinct basilosaurus (basilosaurus cetoides), an ancient archaeocete. Also once named zeuglodon meaning “yoked tooth”. It is a full-size resin cast of an actual basilosaurus fossil tooth, but is in fact a man-made copy, not the original tooth. Note the unique shape of the tooth: double rooted and high-crowned, characteristic of the molars and premolars of archaeoceti. This basilosaurus tooth is so impressive that we decided to provide an elegant, albeit somewhat archaic form of display. The dome display is a vintage glass bell jar with a wood base. The base has been finished in a medium-light colonial maple tone. The underside is fitted with a thin pad of acid-free foam to help prevent tabletop scuffing. The wood base has a nicely routed groove on its edge and a grove on the surface of the base to fitted to the glass dome lip. The glass dome is vintage – a high quality bell jar with much thicker glass than is common in lower quality display domes commonly manufactured today. We mounted a thin steel rod in the center of a matching wood tone trapezoid stabilizer base. The rod fits into a hidden groove in the bottom of the tooth between the roots to stabilize it as it stands upright in the dome. The tooth stands upright at approximately 4.5 inches (11.3 cm) tall and measures 2.5 inches (6.3 cm) across its widest point. Approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) thick. The display dome is 8.5 inches (21.5 cm) tall and has a footprint measuring 4.5 inches (11.5 cm) across. This item is made of glass dome and wood base, cast resin tooth. The style is victorian and steampunk.
